Hello EPX owners!

No doubt everyone has been wondering about EPX and the EPXBikes.com website. I'm unsure of the details, but the short of it is that our EPX bikes are now even rarer collectables! Evan now runs his own specialist bike shop Cyclic Bicycles in Melbourne and as far as I'm aware, EPMB - the mother company of EPX in Malaysia no longer has anything to do with manufacturing the frames or any other parts.

I myself have been running the EPX website in various guises for many years now and am also an EPX owner. There are around 150 members of the forum at the time of writing and so my plans are to keep the website up and running, albeit without any of the retail and support content - as this no longer exists.

I'll be sending this out in an email to all members and I'd like to hear from anyone who would like to comment, what you'd like to see on the site.

At this point, the forum will of course remain running. I'm considering adding a forum for parts so that people can hook up with any sources, or even get together and have the odd piece made up from scratch - I know my Speedster frame already needs the plastic/rubber bump-stop replaced.

I will likely also add a gallery page where I'll post any photos and other information I still have about EPX.

One tweak I've made already is to upgrade and reconfigure the forum editor so that Safari and Google Chrome can now be used for editing posts. I have also greatly increased the number of image attachments that can be added to posts.

I'm all ears for further suggestions - please add comments to this post.

Kind regards,

Robert Axford

Thanks Robert for the update, as I had been wondering...
So are there no more part left in the bin, or is Evan still sitting on some bits and pieces? Will the next major part that breaks render the bike unusable for lack of a replacement? Will we have to employ specialist machine shops to turn out a 'one-off'?!?!?

Hi Robert and Tony Edmonds, if you would like to contact Anthony Avidon in Johannesburg, he has a small stock of parts , including the plastic/rubber elastomer you are looking for Robert, and derailleur hangers for Terrasharks. He can be contacted on email avidon@iafrica.com.

He was the agent for EPX in South Africa, and supplied me various bits to build up my Terrashark.

And regarding the EPX site here... it's been a bit of a downer. 150+ emails went out and just one reply. One odd thing is that there have been one or two new sign-ups every day for the last few weeks, but only one or two of them have actually posted anything. I'm fairly convinced it's a robot creating accounts in preparation for a pile of spamming, so I'm going to turn on captcha security to see if that has any affect.

Don't be too cynical, I've been building (and re-building) my Terrashark for a while now and I regularly follow the forum without posting, somthing I intend to change, as I am quite attached to my creation !

Sad to read EXP no longer exists. My wife rides a 303 and loves it. I'd been hoping to buy one for myself. Quality frameset at an affordable price. Anyone recommend a similar frameset?

 Hi Everyone,

Greetings! Great to see that this site is still up and running. As you know we have a similar bike in Malaysia call t-bolt. I just manage to get my hands on 2 t-bolt frames and am keen to built the bike up. My goal is to get as many carbon fiber parts as possible on the bike. I would like to change the current swing arm which is a metal alloy to the terra shark carbon swing arm.

Would like to seek the advice and help on where I could buy this part. Thanks.

Warm regards,

Edwin

Hi Edwin. FYI, I am about to put on my third TerraShark carbon swing arm. The problem being the bonding between the aluminium pivot and the carbon arm keeps breaking. It takes a lot of stress, and I am no physisist, but I'll bet that most of the force of the movement occurs near or on that pivot joint. I even thought about putting on an aluminium swing arm from the Reef version of the bike! I have had one arm repaired by a specialist ($65!)and will pick it up this week. Maybe he has been able to strengthen it and it will not happen again :-)
I do not do radical stuff, but do quite a lot of XC racing, so nothing out of the ordiinary. Apart from that, the bike is bombproof! :-) :-)

Hi Arwinsor, Thanks for the info. I found a shop in Malaysia that purchased the left over bikes from Proton the maker of T-bolt. I bought my bike from him but as mentioned, it comes with the alloy swing arm. Could you tell me where you purchased your swing arm? Thanks.

Hi Eloh. I got my replacement swingarm from Evan in australia, but I think Robert told us he is not stocking parts anymore, just running a bike shop. You could try my EPX man in Johannesburg, avidon@iafrica.com maybe he'll find something in his parts bin. Seriously though, if this repair doesn't work, I will look for an aluminium replacement & spray it black-less trouble on the trails :-)
I am also going to get the second one repaired when it comes off the bike and keep it for a spare.

I am very said to learn that EPX never made a come back.  I have had sevral high end bikes and the EPX is by far the best one.  www.MTBR.com owners rated it at 3.86.  And that is the kind of thing that killed TerraShark.  The 0 rating is what killed the rating due to the fact he had a creaking bottom bracket.  I had the same creak.  I thought it was the carbon...  But, it way only a crappy bottom bracket.  I replaced it and the problem went away.  Owner error is my guess.

What I think if funny is you cannot get a better bike at any price today.   I  I hope my bike holds up because I do not know what I will do if it fails.

One thing that is confusing is that this link says you can still buy the bike.  http://www.epxbikes.com/MountainBikes/EPXTerrashark/tabid/125/Default.aspx

Hi Bill,

I've also got that creak on mine.. makes the bike sound a like I'm riding some cheap pos, but it's amusing anyway.

It looks like Google still finds the old pages. I had hidden them but not secured them altogether, so I'll do that now. I do plan on putting up all EPX information and images that I still have onhand soon, and then I'll probably pull in some bits from the old website. I have to be careful how I do it because it's not official and will just be for historic interest. I've got some good high quality files that can be used as wallpapers etc.

Hi Andrew, I was wondering if you're still here even!

It's best to make your post in the parts forum rather than in this one as more people are likely to see it. Some of the members will also be keen to hear from someone as involved in the production of the bikes as you were, so please feel free to check out some of the posts and give your advice.

Another thing.. I'd be keen to get hold of any interesting photos of the design and production of the bikes and put a gallery up on the site here. Let me kow if you have anything.

 Hi Rob,

Still here for the moment, teaching at Vic University Design School. I'll come by and chase you up for a coffee soon. It looks like where probably off to Melbourne in next while. Thanks for the tip on the location of posts. I'm happy to answer questions and help out were i can in the forum.

I have loads of photos of all the early and original prototypes and variants. All the stuff built in the Perth Prototyping workshop back in the early days. Also a few pics from when i was working up in KL for EPMB.

Let me know..

Hi Agrowe,

Great to have the "parent" of the terrashark on board. Its a great testament of the design to still have so many people keen on the EPX bikes. Our only wish was that some how it will still be available. As you can see from my other posting, with the help of the people at this forum, I am still able to build a new terrashark. Thanks Robert for keeping this site running and the fellow enthusiast who have help me with making my dream bike available.

Hi Edwin, just saw your (rather old now!) question. Evan sent me a replacement last year (which is now a bit creaky), then I had the original arm repaired and strengthened and put back on the bike. I will think about beefing up the bonding on the spare now.  Long way of saying I don't know where you can get one now
