An old EP-X catalogue from 2001! In it are pictures and specifications for the range: The Roadster - front suspension, fixed rear 'Synchronous Drive' gear with a toothed belt, not a chain and a centre Swing-Arm Pivot so that the bike semi folds! (£1500) The Sand Skimmer - front suspension and 'Synchronous Drive' (£1500) The Mako - front suspension and 27 speed SRAM gears (£1750) The Speedster - front suspension and Rohloff 14 speed sealed rear hub (£2100) The Terra Shark - full suspension and full carbon fibre rear swing-arm (came in three variants - 1 (£1900), 2 (£2250) and 3 (£2500)) There was also a range called Reef, but I don't know anything about them and have never seen one. Anyone else? I was lucky; there was only one shop in Sussex that sold them and I went on an open day to test ride a Terra Shark. Of course, I knew within ten seconds that I'd take it and they were offering a 10% discount if you placed an order on the day, so I got £250 off straightaway! I understand that they made two sales, but I have never seen another EP-X ever again. Great bike! Derek |

Hi Derek, that's certainly a bit of a rarity to find!
If you scan it and email it through to me, I'll put it up with all the other images and material I've got here for the site when I finally get onto it.
I've got a backup of the original UK website that was built at great expense at the time... the domain was ep-x.com, which I see has now just got spam ads on it. That site had the Reef model on it.. it's basically the Terrashark with the alloy swingarm instead of the carbon one.
I'll attach a pic here

Hi Robert
Wow, I got a reply, I wasn't expecting that!
Alas, I don't have a printer or scanner nor know anyone else who does.
If you like, you can PM me with your postal address and I can send the brochure and price list to you so you can do the techno wizardry on my behalf.
Once it's done, you'd have to send them back to me, though, no trying to make easy money on Ebay!
Let me know.
Best Wishes Derek
p.s. Why would anyone buy a Reef when they could have the Terra Shark? The carbon swingarm looks so much better, in my opinion....

Hi Derek, no problem I'll pm you now. I seem to recall the point of the Reef being just a lower cost than the Terrashark. It also seems to match the version of the bike that was made under license in Taiwan later on. |

In 2001 I visited the EPX factory in the Midlands, situated in the old Coventry (?) bike works, but nicely modernised. I tried all of the range you mentioned above, plus some more, like the drop-dead gorgeous Reef Tri-bike etc. Reef was the name given to bikes destined for the Aussie market as I remember, you are correct, they were down-specced, but the alu swingarm may yet prove to be longer-lasting than the carbon one-I am on my third on the Terrashark and keep one spare just in case... I also have the original owner's manual that came with my Mako, detailing all the bikes in the range and basic maintenance of the different drive trains. My Mako was 'made-to-measure' by the nice guys there, as a 9 speed, although I have since made it into a 27 speed by the addition of a SRAM 3 speed internal hub. Sadly the factory closed shortly afterwards, and I had to get spares from Australia, although now I make my own :-). |

| Robert, I recently purchased an EPX Hollowpoint frame and would like to built and paint it as original as it can be. Do you have any references, ie; photos, specs, etc ?. I would like to find out the original colour and the font of the decal that stick on the frame. Preferrably, if you can email infos to hanazli@yahoo.com. Thank you in advance! |

Hi Robert
Thought I'd reply to you via the Forum rather than private e-mail.
The brochure arrived back today in one piece - thank you. I'm looking forward to seeing how it reproduces on the site, and I hope it becomes a useful reference source for other EPX owners out there.
I still can't believe what a good frame it is - so forgiving yet sharp and responsive. £2500 was a lot of money back in 2001, but even today that kind of money won't buy you anything significantly better in my opinion, so it just proves how well designed and engineered the bikes were from the start.
I've just bought a Gocycle as a spare bike, as the rear shock on the Terrashark has finally given up the ghost and is off the road waiting for a replacement by Fox. The Gocycle is a fantastic little machine, but not a patch on the Terrashark.
Check it out:
http://www.gocycle.com/
Wait for the animations to fully load, then click on the '+' symbols for further information.
Also, just wanted to say thank you very much for creating and updating this site - it's the only one of its kind out there on this great brand, so keep up the good work!
Best Wishes
Derek

Yes, thanks for sending the pamphlet through Derek, I'll get the pages up when I finally get around to updating the site here. I've got quite a lot of material to go up and I want to make it useful. I particular I plan on setting it all up in a manner that lets people easily add their own knowldge to the material, and I'll also want to be able to reorganise it over time. I could just throw it all up in a gallery, but it's not goingto be good for items like the scanned brochure, which needs to go up in larger images, or at least be attached as a PDF. I've got a ton of cool functionality here on my server, I just have to get it sorted out. I'll probably go with an article manager/blog type of tool and let everyone comment and also let some people author posts. Rob |

Hi Adrian, What have you got... I've really only got the info that was originally published on the website here. There are just some tables with frame measurements. If you have anything with better detail then that would be good to have as well. One useful thing in Derek's brochure is that it lists the original build, and poepl have asked for that sort of info in the past. Anything you can provide will certainly make it onto the website, so yes please |
